What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?
My wife Barb and I are the owners of Gull Dam Brewing [in Nisswa, Minn.]. What started two-and-a-half years ago as homebrewing in our kitchen developed into our first operational brewery with a 20-bbl system.
What’s new at Gull Dam?
Our grand opening was October 11, just in time for Oktoberfest. We have a Gull Dam event center with more than 3,000 square feet for special occasions.
What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?
The people associated with craft brewing are down to earth. From other brewers to the customers, they are all worth it! And by the way, the beer sampling is fun too!
What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?
Go boating or flying.
What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?
Swedish sausage and Amber Ale.
What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?
Flying jets for a living and winning election to the House of Representatives.
What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?
Rye stout.
What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?
As an adventure Barb and I rode Amtrak from St. Paul to Portland for Fresh Hop Fest. (We flew home, though.) Too many great local beers to mention!
