Brewers Association Stewardship Report – Brewers Publications

With the publication of the 2013 Stewardship Report, the Brewers Association is highlighting some particular areas of interest regarding the organization’s endeavors and accomplishments on behalf of members in 2013.


Brewers Publications, a program run by the Brewers Association (BA), is the largest publisher of contemporary and relevant brewing literature for today’s craft brewers, homebrewers and beer enthusiasts. With over 50 titles to choose from, there is a beer book to fill most needs. This program helps support the BA’s mission through both promotion and education. In the recently published Stewardship Report, the BA highlights the activities of Brewers Publications in 2013:

Brewers Publications supports the mission of the Brewers Association by publishing books of enduring value for amateur and professional brewers as well as titles that promote understanding and appreciation of American craft beer by consumers. 

Revenue generated by Brewers Publications’ titles exceeded $2 million—a 31 percent increase over 2012. New books, The Brewers Association’s Guide to Starting Your Own Brewery, Second Edition by Dick Cantwell and Water: A Comprehensive Guide for Brewers by John Palmer and Colin Kaminski. 

Amazon sales surpassed $1 million in net revenue. Gross and net sales at the National Book Network (NBN) were both up 33% while returns dropped to 2.17%. 

BP books are doing well in both major book chains as well as at distributors: Barnes & Noble (up 46%), Amazon (up 27%), Baker & Taylor (up 38%) and Ingram (up 26%).

BP’s top sellers through NBN were: 

  • #4 How to Brew by John Palmer (up from #5) 
  • #14 For the Love of Hops by Stan Hieronymus 
  • #19 Water: A Comprehensive Guide for Brewers by John Palmer and Colin Kaminski
  • #21 Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels (down from #16)
  • #25 Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation by Chris White and Jamil Zainasheff (up from #38) 

BP also had the opportunity to be featured at BJ’s warehouse chain stores in the last quarter of 2013. Boxes of How to Brew were set up in a display next to homebrew kits. By year end, 68 percent of the units ordered had been sold and continue to sell.
