MacKenzie Staples is the education program manager for the Brewers Association. In addition to managing the resources and articles on BrewersAssociation.org, she organizes the seminars for the Craft Brewers Conference® (CBC), curates the webinars in the BA Collab Hour series, and serves as the staff liaison for the CBC Seminar Subcommittee. She is originally from Texas where she fell in love with craft beer, and is proud to say that she has visited over 800 U.S. small and independent craft breweries.

The TTB Bootcamp for Brewers is a series of sessions designed to give both new and established brewers explanations of Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) requirements, as well as tips for how to avoid common pitfalls.

Formulas and Labeling

The primary purpose of Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) labeling requirements is to make sure consumers get adequate information about what they are purchasing and are not misled about a product’s age, origin, or identity. To that end, beer labels must include certain information based on how they are formulated and where they will be sold.

This session covers all of the mandatory formula and labeling information for beers and malt beverages as outlined in the labeling regulations and the relevant TTB rulings. TTB staff also share the top label and application errors that they see and provide tips on how to avoid them.

Records, Reports, and Tax Returns

In this session, learn what you need to know about federal beer excise taxes, including calculating how much tax you owe, filing your tax returns, and completing brewery operational reports. We’ll also tell you about the ongoing beer tax modernization pilot project and give you a preview of what beer taxes and reporting could look like in the future!

Non-Traditional Products

Beyond beer products made with malted barley and hops may have different federal requirements, depending on a variety of factors, including ingredients, alcohol content, and how they are made. In this session, you learn the ins and outs of various product requirements, including low- and non-alcohol beers, hard seltzers, hard kombuchas, and ready-to-drink cocktails (RTDs).
