What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?

I am brewmaster at Squatters Pub Brewery [in Salt Lake City, Utah] and research and development director at Salt Lake Brewing Company. I was a homebrewer and lover of beer. I was 21 when Dan Burick gave me the opportunity to be his assistant at Squatters in 1991.

What’s new at Squatters?

High alcohol beer production, barrel aging sour beers, and bottle conditioning. We have also been in the process of developing a better system for wastewater management.

What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?

Just that, the craft brewing community. The people that are involved in our industry are fantastic and I cherish the relationships I have with them.

What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?

Camp with my family, mountain bike, travel and drink beer.

What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?

Humboldt Fog [goat cheese] and Fifth Element Farmhouse Ale.

What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?

Giving birth to my two children, Dylan Martin and Vienna Mary Jane.

What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?

Sierra Nevada Celebration. It’s like an old best friend. It never lets me down.

What’s the most exotic travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?

The Lambeek region of Belgium.
