What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?
I am currently one of two owners and brewers here at Red Wing Brewery [in Red Wing, Minn.] I got my start many years ago when my father received a beer kit for Christmas. We started in our kitchen at home and I have been brewing ever since. We opened in December of last year and this is my first commercial experience in the brewing industry.
What’s new at Red Wing?
We are a start-up brewery, and the only brewery currently in Red Wing, Minn. In a sense everything is new for the city. More specifically we have just introduced some new pizzas to our food lineup and our Cokins Bavarian Style beer to the beer lineup.
What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?
Scott Kolby, my business partner, and I love to go around and check out other breweries. It seems like all of the other brewers are supportive, especially the brewers in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area which is just around the corner.
What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?
I spend most of my time at the brewery, but I do enjoy the outdoors and like to kayak and hike. I also just purchased a house in Red Wing and spend time fixing it up.
What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?
I like to pair our Buffalo-style chicken pizza with our Jordan Creek IPA.
What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?
Getting my Master’s degree. I have always struggled with formal education.
What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?
Johnny "Blood" Red from Titletown Brewing in Green Bay, Wis. (my hometown).
What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?
I have traveled to Duluth and sampled some of the beers at Fitgers. I traveled there when there were not too many other breweries in that area. I look forward to going back and sampling beer from the new breweries that have just popped up.
